GAME 1 BOX SCORE
GAME 2 BOX SCORE

WAYNE, Neb.
- Wayne State held off Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday, defeating the Mustangs 7-5 and 2-0 in Wayne, Neb.

WSC improves to 32-12 (17-5 NSIC), while SMSU falls to 17-20 (10-12 NSIC).

SMSU trailed 7-3 heading into the final inning of play in Game 1 and had the winning runs on base with one out, but the Mustangs could not get capitalize on their loaded bases situation, lining out to short and striking out to close the game.

WSC led early, building a 3-0 advantage after three innings of play.  The Mustangs answered with two runs in the top of the fourth via a two-run homer from Amanda Neumann--her fourth of the year--to make it a 3-2 game.

The Wildcats took advantage of two Mustang errors and scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning.

Krista Steen nailed her fourth home run of the season in the top of the sixth, but WSC dropped one run on SMSU in the bottom of the frame.

Working from a 7-3 difference, SMSU nearly made a comeback in the seventh.  Singles from Kristin Braden, Meaghan LaetschBrittney Hallahan and Amy Dreessen quickly scored a run, while Christine Borowiak coaxed a walk with the bases jammed to score another.  With one out and the bases loaded, WSC pitcher Katie Goetzinger forced a Steen line out to short and sent Neumann down swinging.

Steen paced the Mustangs with a 2 for 4 performance that included a pair of RBIs and her solo homer.

Chelsey Evans was tagged with the loss; she gave up seven runs--four earned--on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.  Cortney Heim finished the final two-thirds of the game and gave up one hit.

WSC's Goetzinger struckout 10 Mustang batters to pick up her 21st win of the season.

The Wildcats held SMSU to just four hits in Game 2 as they snuck out a 2-0 victory.

Goetzinger notched another win for WSC, allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings.

Hallahan, Neumann, Braden and Andrea Fennern each collected one hit for SMSU.

The Wildcats spread their two runs over four innings, pushing one across in the third and the other in the sixth.

Heim threw a complete game for SMSU, allowing nine hits.   She moves to 7-9 on the season with the loss.

The Mustangs will finish the 2010 regular season on the road this weekend when they travel to Winona State and Upper Iowa for a pair of conference doubleheaders.
