Schrader Leads SMSU to Split with Bemidji State

MARSHALL, Minn. – Adam Schrader tossed his fifth career shutout, including the second this season, to lead Southwest Minnesota State to an 8-0 victory in game two of a doubleheader in Marshall.

Bemidji State (12-19, 3-11 NSIC) rallied for a 4-2 sixth inning deficit with six unanswered runs in the final four innings, five of them unearned, to earn an 8-4 victory in game one.

In game one, Adam Thygesen led the SMSU (9-11, 5-5 NSIC) offensive attack with his first career three-hit game.  Tyler Fayden belted a two-run homer, his second long ball of the season.  Josh Wendland also had two hit for the Mustangs, who finished with eight hits in the game.

Brad Haag started for SMSU and tossed six-plus innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, three earned, while striking out five and walking three.  Matt Paulson was the tough luck loser, pitching two innings and allowing one unearned run.

SMSU scored the game's first run as Thygesen stole home in the first inning to give SMSU a 1-0 lead.

BSU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, before SMSU answered in the bottom half of the inning as Josh Wendland smacked a two-out double and moments later came around to score on a single by Brian Ness to tie the game at 2-2.

SMSU regained the lead in the fifth as Thygesen reached on a one-out single and came around to score on a two-out, two-run home over the right field wall by Fayden to give SMSU a 4-2 advantage.

 BSU came back and answered with single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to regain the lead at 5-4, then scored three runs in the ninth to put the game away.  BSU's last five runs scored were all unearned.

In game two, Schrader was outstanding and he improved to 2-3 on the season, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and one walk.  Schrader finished tossing 98 pitches, including 67 for strikes.

Tyler Fayded paced the SMSU offense with three hits, while Chris Eicten added two hits and two RBI.

SMSU scored all the runs they would need in the second inning as Eicten delivered a two-out two-run single off of BSU starter Dan Bauer.

The Mustangs plated four unearned runs in the fourth inning taking advantage of a costly two-out error by BSU.  With the bases loaded, Bobby Zellman lofted a fly ball to left field that was dropped by the left fielder and allowing two runs to score.  Derick Swenson then followed with a two-run single to make the score 6-0.

SMSU closed out the scoring in the sixth inning on a two-run single to left field by Brian Ness.

Southwest Minnesota State will head to the road this weekend for a four-game series at Minnesota, Crookston starting on Saturday at 12 p.m.
