Mustangs Drop Two at Winona State

WINONA, Minn.
– Winona State broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader to notch a 5-4 victory and complete a sweep of Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon in Winona. The Warriors won Game 1 of the twinbill 3-1.

WSU improves to 34-8 (20-4 NSIC), while SMSU falls to 17-22 (10-14 NSIC).

The Mustangs are currently in eighth place in the latest NSIC standings.  SMSU will need to win just one of tomorrow's games at Upper Iowa to clinch a spot in the NSIC Tournament.

SMSU trailed by one run heading into the sixth inning of Game 1, having scored one run in the top of the third inning after Brittney Hallahan singled to lead off the inning and was pushed in three batters later by another single from Christine Borowiak. The run made it a 2-1 contest as WSU had scored two in the first inning.

WSU's Mollie Bjelland homered in the sixth inning to put her Warriors up 3-1. The lead stuck through the seventh.

Amanda Voss led SMSU with a 2 for 3 performance at the plate. She was the lone Mustang to register a multi-hit game.

Chelsey Evans worked a complete game for the Mustangs, allowing three earned runs on four hits. She falls to 3-3.

WSU snapped a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh of Game 2 to finish the sweep.

Meaghan Laetsch, Amanda Neumann and Hallahan each collected two hits for the Mustangs.

SMSU led 2-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, but the Warriors pushed in two runs and scored another via a Mustang error to go ahead 4-2.

SMSU got within one run in the fifth after Laetsch hit in Andrea Fennern, who had reached on an error to lead off the inning.

The Mustangs finally tied the game in the seventh inning after singles from Hallahan, Laetsch and Amy Dreessen.

But the Warriors came up with the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame.

Cortney Heim threw a complete game for SMSU; she falls to 8-9 on the season.

SMSU will travel to UIU for a 12 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow.
