SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Concordia University, St. Paul held Southwest Minnesota State to just four hits and one run to defeat the Mustangs 3-1 and eliminate them from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Friday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
CU improves to 32-14 and plays Winona State tonight, while SMSU finishes its season with a record of 18-25.
SMSU's four hits were divided between
Meaghan Laetsch,
Amy Dreessen,
Christine Borowiak and
Amanda Neumann. Dreessen hit a solo home run in the first inning to score the Mustangs' only run.
Cortney Heim worked a complete game for the Mustangs, allowing five hits and one earned run. She finishes the season 8-12.
Ashley Kluever recorded the win for CU and improves to 13-4.
Katie Anderson's 2 for 3 performance paced the Golden Bears.
SMSU's only lead of the game came after Dreesen's solo shot—her fourth of the year—in the top of the first.
Two SMSU errors in the bottom half of the inning proved costly. After retiring one batter, Heim overthrew a ball to first base, allowing CU's Anderson to reach second. On the ensuing at bat, Anderson stole third; Mustang catcher
Krista Steen nearly threw her out, but the ball bounced off Anderson as she slid and rolled into left field, allowing the Golden Bears to tie the contest at 1-1.
CU managed another run in the third to take its first lead of the game. After a scoreless fourth, the Golden Bears used a sacrifice fly to take a decisive 3-1 advatnage. Neither squad would score for the remainder of the contest.
SMSU's 18-25 record marks the programs first sub-.500 season since 2005 when the Mustangs finished 22-25.
