DENVER –
Christine Borowiak and Krista Steen each collected two hits, while Ali Honken tossed a complete game five-hitter, tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts, to help Southwest Minnesota State earn a 4-1 victory in game two of a doubleheader and earn a split with Regis University (Colo.) on Saturday in Denver.

Regis won the opener 8-0 in five innings.

In the nightcap, SMSU (2-2) used the strong performance by Honken to pick up the split. The senior right-hander racked up 10 strikeouts and limited the Rangers to just five hits and one unearned run, to move her record to 1-1 on the season.

SMSU scored the game's first runs in the bottom of the first on bases loaded walks by Amy Dreessen and Amanda Voss.

Regis (5-4) trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the top of fifth, before SMSU answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a run-scoring single by Kristin Braden to make the score 3-1. The Mustangs closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth pushing across a run on a Regis error.

In the opener, SMSU was held to just two hits by Regis starter Holley Bianca. Borowiak and Brittney Hallahan collected the hits for the Mustangs.

Courtney Heim (1-1) suffered the loss for SMSU, tossing 3.2 innings allowing seven runs on nine hits, while walking five.

SMSU will close out its opening weekend six-game road trip tomorrow at 12 p.m. CST with a doubleheader at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.
