Mustang Softball Loses Two Straight by Eight-Run Rule

KISSIMMEE, Fla. –
Southwest Minnesota State lost two straight games by the eight-run rule on Friday morning of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. In the opener, Northwood University (Mich.) used an eight-run first inning to down the Mustangs before California (Pa.) (11-5) defeated the Mustangs 12-3. SMSU is now 10-8 on the season while Northwood improves to 4-5.

Northwood University (Mich.) scored eight runs in the first inning to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 12-4 in the Rebel Spring Games on Friday morning. Northwood improves to 4-5 on the season.

Northwood scored all eight of its runs with two outs in the first inning. The Timberwolves started the inning off with a single by Hammer who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Chelsey Evans then struck out the number three hitter before walking three straight hitters.

Northwood went on to hit two straight doubles before a two-run homerun by Hammer put the Timberwolves up 8-0.

The Timberwolves began the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff double by Borkowski who was followed by an RBI single by Zaborowski.

Katie Turner, Christine Borowiak and Krista Steen each had two hits for the Mustangs. SMSU scored all three of its runs in the third inning

Turner hit a base clearing double in the top of the third inning to cut into Northwood's lead. The Mustangs added an run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Borowiak.

SMSU used three different pitchers in the contest, Evans was tagged with the loss in the game. Cortney Heim and Lauren Smith both came in relief during the game. Evans is now 1-1 on the season after pitching 1 2/3 of an inning allowing five runs on two hits while walking four batters.

Game two

California (Pa.) used a five-run fourth inning and a six-run fifth inning to defeat the Mustangs in five innings on Friday morning.

The Mustangs would carry a lead heading into the fourth inning after scoring one run in the second inning on an RBI single by Kristin Braden, scoring Turner who reached on a single to begin the inning.

After a quick top of the third inning SMSU would gain a 3-1 lead after Borowiak belted her fourth homerun of the season over the right field fence.

After a strong start by Ali Honken, the Vulcans put together a five-run fourth inning to jump out to a 6-3 lead over SMSU. California (Pa.)strung together three straight hits to begin the fourth inning with the big blow coming on a two-run double by Shelby Lia.

California (Pa.) struck for six more runs in the top of the fifth inning which was aided by SMSU fielding errors. The Mustangs were unable to turn a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth into a scoring opportunity and lost for the second straight game by the eight-run rule.

Southwest Minnesota State will put an end to its 10-game trip in Florida tomorrow morning taking on Ferris State (Mich.) at 9 a.m. before playing Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) at 11 a.m. on the last day of the Rebel Spring Games.
