GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team snapped a six-match losing streak with a 5-4 win over Minnesota, Crookston (4-7, 1-6 NSIC) on Sunday in Grand Forks. SMSU (3-9, 3-5 NSIC) won three out of six singles matches and two out of three doubles matches en route to a 5-4 win over the Golden Eagles.
The Mustangs began the day by taking two straight doubles matches starting with
Cailey Grupe and
Trisha Baldwin who defeated Cassie Jarvis and Michelle Boateng 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Angie Wiegmann and
Kasey Uran followed that with an 8-6 win over Katelyn Johnson and Amanda Pihlaja at No. 2 doubles. SMSU would take a 2-1 lead into the singles matches.
SMSU then took three out of six singles matches to earn a 5-4 win over the Golden Eagles. Grupe defeated Johnson 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while Baldwin (No. 2 singles) defeated Jarvis 6-1, 6-0 and Wiegmann (No. 3 singles) downed Boateng 6-0, 6-0.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue NSIC action on Saturday, April 2 taking on Northern State at 10 a.m. before squaring off against Augustana at 5 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D.
