KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team picked up two wins in the first day of the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Mustangs started off the day with an 8-4 win over Southern Indiana before picking up a 5-0 win over the University of Sciences (Pa.) in their second game of the day.
The Mustangs improve to 8-4 on the season while Southern Indiana falls to 5-6 and University of Sciences (Pa.) falls to 1-2.
Ali Honken shut the Devils down in SMSU's second game of the day picking up 11 strikeouts while facing 16 batters and giving up just one hit. This was the fourth time this season that Honken has struck out more than 10 batters in a game for SMSU.
Game one
Krista Steen led the Mustangs at the plate going 4 for 4 against Southern Indiana picking up one RBI.
Kaley Scearcy and
Micki Seibring drove in four of SMSU's eight runs. Steen started off the inning with a double.
Katie Turner followed that with a single and Scearcy pinch-hit for
Ashley Gigax and drove in two runs.
The Mustangs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Steen. Southern Indiana turned around in the top of the second inning with a solo homerun by Reva Bourgasser.
Micki Seibring stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and hit a bloop single over third base which scored two runs for the Mustangs, giving SMSU a 4-2 lead.
Chelsea Evans entered the game in relief of
Cortney Heim and worked her way out of a bases loaded jam keeping the score at 4-2 in favor of the Mustangs.
The Screaming Eagles fought back in the top of the fifth inning to even the score 4-4. Katherine Belsito picked up two RBIs on a double down the left field line. Evans would once again have to work out of a bases loaded jam to keep the score close.
SMSU scored four runs in the home half of the fifth inning and that would provide enough insurance for the Mustangs to pull away with the win.
Southern Indiana once again loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning, and Evans was there to shut the door again, working out of her third bases loaded jam of the game.
Game two
The Mustangs picked away at the Devils in the Mustangs second game of the afternoon. SMSU scored one run in the second, third and fourth innings before scoring two in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead over University of Sciences (Pa.).
Honken was dominant in the circle once again this season striking out 11 batters in the game.
Christine Borowiak was 4 for 4 at the plate for the Mustangs against the Screaming Eagles. She finished the game with one RBI. Borowiak began the top of the second with a leadoff triple and scored on a fielder's choice by Steen.
Kristen Braden doubled to right center in the top of the third inning to drive in
Jennifer Johnson who reached on a fielder's choice.
Micki Seibring led off the top of the fifth inning with her second homerun of the season giving SMSU a 4-0 lead over the Devils.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue play in the Rebel Spring Games tomorrow afternoon taking on Northwood (Mich.) at 1 p.m. before playing Wheeling Jesuit (W. Va.) at 3 p.m. in Kissimmee, Fla.
