Mustangs Split Doubleheader with Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team split a doubleheader against Saint Leo University Tuesday evening in Saint Leo, Fla. The Mustangs won the opening game 4-0 before falling 9-1 in six innings in the nightcap. The Mustangs are now 10-6 on the season while Saint Leo is now 14-15.

Ali Honken pitched seven shutout innings of softball leading the Southwest Minnesota State to a 4-0 win over Saint Leo University in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday evening. The Mustangs scored four runs in the top of the second inning and that would be enough for the win.

The Mustangs took an early lead with a four-run second inning against Saint Leo. Kaley Scearcy began the inning slapping a single down the left field line. Voss then hit into a fielder's choice with Scearcy advancing to second.

After Seibring was hit by a pitch to load the bases, the Mustangs would score their first run on a wild pitch. Kingery then delivered a two-RBI single up the middle scoring Seibring and Voss.

Krista Steen hit a triple to leadoff the top of the third inning, which would be the Mustang's last hit of the game. SMSU went down in order every inning after Steen's triple in the third inning but would hang on to win the first game of a doubleheader.

Honken improves to 6-2 on the season third straight game on the season. The senior finished with six strikeouts while allowing eight hits and just one walk.

Game two


The Mustangs took an early lead in the second game when Amy Dreessen singled up the middle to score Kingery who walked to leading off for the Mustangs. The Lions fired back to take the lead in the bottom of the inning picking up three runs on four hits.

Dreessen led the Mustangs in the game finishing with two hits in three at bats driving in SMSU's only run of the game.

The Lions strung together four singles to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Heim would get herself out of the jam by striking out Gonzalez for her second strikeout of the inning.

The Lions added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning on four hits. Saint Leo began the rally with a leadoff double by Elysha Agen down the right field line. Boyd then singled down the left field line to drive in another run before Gonzalez doubled to right center to add another Lion run. Saint Leo carried a 6-1 lead into the fourth inning.

Chelsey Evans came into the game in the middle of the third inning in relief of Cortney Heim. Evans pitched three innings for SMSU finishing with two strikeouts. Heim was tagged with the loss in the game and is now 3-4 on the season.

Saint Leo extended its lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run single by Agen. In their next at bat the Lions won the game by the eight-run rule on a single by Brittany Yates.

The Mustangs will take Wednesday off before continuing play in the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday taking on Indiana (Pa.) at 9 a.m. EST before taking on California (Pa.) at 11 a.m. EST.
