Honken Tosses One-Hit Shutout to Earn Split Against Wayne State; Wildcats Blank Mustangs in Game One

MARSHALL, Minn. - Kaley Scearcy's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the fifth inning led the Mustangs to a 1-0 win over Wayne State (Neb.) in the second game of a doubleheader earning the split. Ali Honken won her 12th game of the season while giving up one hit and tossing seven shutout innings.

SMSU, ranked No. 7 in the Central Region, is now 20-11 overall and 8-3 in NSIC play while Wayne State falls to 21-12, 9-3 NSIC on the season.

Honken pitched a complete game for the 12th time this season, earning her seventh shutout of the season. The senior held the Wildcats' hitless for almost three full innings before Kassie Nurton doubled to right field with two outs in the top of the third inning. She finished the game with five strikeouts while walking two batters.

Wayne State, ranked No. 8 in the Central Region, used a three-run third inning en route to a 5-0 game one win over the Mustangs in game one. Katie Goetzinger tossed five shutout innings striking out 10 batters while allowing just two hits to earn the win.

The Mustangs scored the lone run of the second game in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Scearcy. Amy Dreessen began the inning with a sharp double to left center field. Scearcy stepped up to the plate to pinch-hit for Ashley Gigax.

Scearcy popped a high fly over the shortstop, having the ball land safely between the left fielder and the infield dirt. Dreessen scored on the play after moving to third base on a ground out by Katie Turner.

Goetzinger had held the Mustangs hitless until Christine Borowiak doubled to right center with two outs in the home half of the fourth inning.

SMSU was only able to muster up two hits in game one of Goetzinger, who finished the game with 10 strikeouts in five innings of work.

The Wildcats struck early in the game scoring one run in the top of the first inning on a sharp single by Rachel Dukich. Wayne State went on to score three runs in the top of the second inning while adding one more in the top of the fifth inning to earn a 5-0 win over SMSU.

Chelsey Evans pitched three innings of relief for SMSU giving up just two hits, one run and striking out three batters. Cortney Heim followed with two innings of relieve allowing two hits, no runs and striking out two. Honken was tagged with the loss in game one for SMSU.

Southwest Minnesota State will continue NSIC play on Saturday hosting Winona State at 1 p.m. at Mustang Field in Marshall. The Mustangs will then play host to Upper Iowa at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
