MARSHALL, Minn. – No. 8 ranked Winona State shutout Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Marshall. The Warriors' Courtney Strang threw a no-hitter through four innings en rout to a 4-0 game one win before Winona State walked away with a 9-0 win in game two taking the doubleheader.
Winona State, also ranked No. 2 in the Central Region, improves to 27-4 overall and 11-1 in NSIC play while SMSU, ranked No. 7 in the Central Region, is now 20-13, 8-5 NSIC on the season. Strang threw seven innings of shutout softball to earn the game one victory for Winona State.
Strang allowed four hits while walking three batters and picking up six strikeouts earning her 14th win of the season. The Mustangs were able to scatter four hits on the Winona State starter after going hitless for four innings.
SMSU's
Kristin Braden broke up the no-hit bid with a single through the left side of the infield in the fifth inning. She would end up being stranded on first base.
The Mustangs put together a threat in the bottom of the seventh inning after Braden walked and
Micki Seibring delivered single.
Kris Penick advanced both runners on a sacrifice but, but
Jennifer Johnson would ground out to second base to end the game.
Ali Honken was tagged with the loss for SMSU. The senior pitched all seven innings allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned. She struck out six batters in the game while walking just one.
Kathy Crudo and Mollie Bjelland both had two RBIs for Winona State. Crudo delivered a two-RBI single to right field to put the Warriors on the board in the third inning. Bjelland hit an RBI double in the fifth and seventh innings to cushion the Warriors' lead.
After scoring one run in the top of the first inning, Winona State broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning piling up five runs on six hits, highlighted by a grand slam home run by Molly Link.
Stacey Struzynski earned the win for WSU pitching six innings allowing two hits and striking out four batters. SMSU was held hitless through three innings of play before Braden delivered a leadoff single in the second innings.
After coming in for an injured
Ashley Gigax, Braden had a hit in each game today.
Christine Borowiak was the only other Mustang to have more than one hit in the doubleheader.
Southwest Minnesota State returns home tomorrow afternoon taking on Upper Iowa in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
