MARSHALL, Minn. – SMSU's
Jennifer Johnson executed the squeeze play to score
Krista Steen in the bottom of the seventh to give the Mustangs a 2-1 victory over Upper Iowa in the second game of an NSIC doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Marshall. Southwest Minnesota State (22-13, 10-5 NSIC) swept Upper Iowa (5-32, 1-12 NSIC) in the twinbill winning the first game 5-1.
Ali Honken threw all seven innings of game one for SMSU earning her 13th win of the season. Honked allowed just four hits while walking none and striking out four batters.
SMSU opened the scoring in game one in the third inning on an RBI single by
Kristin Braden. With two runners on Braden delivered a single up the middle scoring
Kris Penick. On the same play,
Kelsey Kingery was thrown out in between second and third base for the second out of the inning.
Upper Iowa answered in the top of the fourth inning scoring a run on a single by Erin Bennek. Bennek hit a shot to left field where SMSU's Penick over ran the ball allowing Chelsey Sechrest, who reached on a single to lead off the inning, to score.
Southwest Minnesota State answered with four runs on five hits during the home half of the fourth inning.
With one out in the inning,
Amy Dreessen delivered a double to left center field.
Micki Seibring followed that with another double to give SMSU a 2-1 lead over the Peacocks.
After a ground out by
Kaley Scearcy,
Katie Turner doubled down the left field line scoring Seibring. Penick followed that with an RBI triple scoring Turner. Kingery added one more run for SMSU with a single down the left field chalk scoring Penick.
The two teams would go scoreless for the remainder of the game. Neither team was able to muster up a hit until Upper Iowa hit a single in the top of the seventh inning.
Chelsey Evans earned her sixth win of the season in game two of the doubleheader. Evans threw all seven innings allowing three hits while walking none and striking out five batters.
Upper Iowa opened the scoring in the third inning taking a 1-0 lead on a squeeze play.
Dreessen answered the Peacocks in the bottom half of the inning with her third home run of the season. The first baseman sent a deep shot over the center field fence at Mustang Field.
The teams would play scoreless softball for the remainder the of the game until SMSU head coach Shawn Semler put on the squeeze play with one out and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh.
Steen and Dreessen began the inning with back-to-back walks before Seibring advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt.
Johnson delivered the game winning RBI on the squeeze play scoring Steen on the play to give the Mustangs the 2-1 victory.
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to St. Cloud State for a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. before returning home on Friday to play its final home game of the season against Minnesota State at 2 p.m.
