ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Amy Dreessen had three hits, including a two-run home run and three RBIs helping SMSU to a 6-0 win over St. Cloud State in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
Chelsey Evans earned her first career complete game shutout in game two leading SMSU to a 5-0 win.
Southwest Minnesota State is now 24-13 overall and 12-5 in NSIC play while St. Cloud State is 19-22, 4-12 NSIC.
SMSU was held to just four hits in game two, but was able to score five runs to defeat the host Huskies 5-0.
Dreessen (3-for-3),
Katie Turner (2-for-3), and
Kaley Scearcy (2-for-4) each had multiple hits for SMSU as the Mustangs finished the first of two games with 11 hits.
Ali Honken tossed her 15th complete game of the season, earning her eighth shutout in game one. Honken allowed three hits in the game while striking out eight batters and walking four. The senior is now 14-6 on the season.
The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
Christine Borowiak reached on catcher's interference with the bases loaded scoring
Katie Turner on the play.
SMSU put two more runs on the board in the fifth inning. Turner began the inning with a lead off walk before
Amy Dreessen moved her to second on a single to center field.
Krista Steen reached on a fielder's choice while Turner was thrown out at home plate.
Dreessen came across home plate on a wild pitch by the Huskies. Borowiak then delivered her second RBI of the game with a single to left field scoring Steen giving SMSU a 3-0 lead.
Southwest Minnesota State broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning scoring three runs on five hits. The Mustangs also left three runners on base in the inning.
Turner began the inning with a single to center field setting the table for Dreessen to hit her fourth home run of the season. The first baseman drilled a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead.
Steen followed Dreessen's home run with a single and Borowiak walked. After two straight strikeouts,
Kristin Braden singled to left field to load the bases.
Kris Penick singled to right field scoring Steen giving SMSU the six-run lead.
Game two
SMSU scored two runs in the top of the first inning of game two jumping out to an early lead. Turner reached base on a fielder's choice setting up Steen's fifth home run of the season. Steen was 1-for-4 in the game with the home run and two RBIs.
Evans held the Huskies hitless until the fourth inning. The junior finished the game with five strikeouts while allowing three walks and three hits in the game.
The Huskies' put together a threat in the fourth inning loading the bases before Evans ended the inning with one of her eight strikeouts.
Dreessen, who had four hits in seven at bats in the doubleheader, drove in her fourth run of the day when she doubled down the left field line scoring Turner on the play. SMSU added to its lead in the fourth inning on a single by Braden scoring Seibring who reached base on a walk.
The Mustangs added once again in the top of the seventh inning when
Katie Turner belted her fifth home run of the season over the center field fence.
Southwest Minnesota State is scheduled to host No. 12 Minnesota State in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 2 p.m. at Mustang Field in Marshall.
