MARSHALL, Minn. –
Ali Honken tossed a one-hitter in game one, while Kelsey Kingery blasted a pair of home runs and finished with six RBIs in game two, to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a doubleheader sweep over MSU Moorhead on Saturday in Marshall.

The victory in game one was also the 400th collegiate win for SMSU head coach Shawn Semler. He now has a career mark of 401-249 in 14 seasons as a head coach, including eight at SMSU.

SMSU (19-10, 7-2 NSIC), ranked No. 7 in the NCAA Central Region rankings, won the opener 8-0 and completed the sweep with a 13-1 victory in five innings. The games were played in Marshall after originally scheduled for Moorhead, but were moved due to poor field conditions. MSUM falls to 10-4, 2-8 NSIC.

Honken was one out away from tossing her first career no-hitter, but MSU Moorhead's AJ Hoefer beat out an infield single to third base for the Dragons' only hit of the game.

Honken, who entered the game with a 0.72 ERA, struck out seven batters and walked just one, in earning her sixth shutout of the season.

Christine Borowiak finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, including belting a three-run home run. Ashley Gigax collected two hits and three RBIs, while Micki Seibring added three hits, including a triple, double and single.

Borowiak snapped a scoreless tie in the third inning with a two-out single to score Kaley Scearcy. Borowiak then pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fifth with a two-out, three-run homer.

SMSU closed the game with a single run in the sixth and three more in the seventh, on a three-run double by Gigax to push the lead to 8-0.

In game two, Kingery, making her first start of the weekend, blasted a pair of home runs and finished 4 for 4 with six RBIs and three runs scored. The six RBIs are the most by an SMSU player since Erin Dickhausen in 2006.

Katie Turner also hit two home runs and finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Borowiak was a perfect 3 for 3 with an RBI, while Krista Steen collected two hits and two RBIs.

Kingery gave SMSU a 1-0 lead with a lead-off homer to start the game. Following an RBI ground out by Kris Penick in the second, Kingery followed with a two-run homer to give SMSU a 4-0 lead.

Turner belted a solo homer to lead off the third, before Kingery drilled a two-run double to make the score 7-0.

The Mustangs completed the victory with a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home by Turner.

Chelsey Evans moved to 5-2 on the season and picked up her third victory in two days, tossing 4.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Lauren Smith started on the mound for SMSU but lasted just one-third of inning, giving up two hits and one walk.

SMSU will continue its homestand on Wednesday, April 13, taking on Wayne State at Mustang Field starting at 2 p.m.
