SMSU's Borowiak Big Flies Lead SMSU to Game One Win; Mustangs Erase Early Deficit in Game Two to Earn Sweep

ABERDEEN, S.D. –
Christine Borowiak went 3-for-4 in game one including two home runs and a career-high seven RBIs leading Southwest Minnesota State (27-16, 15-8 NSIC) to a 13-5 victory over Northern State (14-27, 7-14 NSIC) in game one. The Mustangs rallied from a 3-0 deficit in game two, to win the nightcap 7-5.

Borowiak finished the day going 4-for-8 at the plate with three home runs and eight RBIs. Southwest Minnesota State, ranked No. 8 in the Central Region, went on a bit of a power surge hitting six home runs in the doubleheader. Kaley Scearcy, Micki Seibring and Amy Dreessen also added home runs for the Mustangs on Sunday.

Ali Honken earned her 15th win of the season in game one. The senior tossed five innings allowing five runs, four earned, striking out seven batters and walking four.

Kelli Bornander earned the loss for the Wolves falling to 3-11 on the season.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Borowiak.

SMSU then tacked on four more runs in the top of the second. Katie Turner led off the inning with a single to right field allowing Kaley Scearcy to hit her second home run of the season to make the score 4-0.

Borowiak delivered a two-out, two-run single scoring Dreessen and Amber Peterson who pinch ran for Jennifer Johnson extending SMSU's lead to 6-0.

Northern State broke open it's scoring in the third inning scoring one run on two hits. Honken was able to stop the bleeding stranding three runners on base to end the inning.

Southwest Minnesota State broke the game open in the fourth inning scoring seven runs on five hits and two errors. Kelsey Kingery came into the game as a pinch runner for Johnson and scored on an RBI triple by Kris Penick.

Seibring followed that with an RBI double scoring Penick. Dreessen reached on an error by the left fielder setting up Borowiak to hit her second home run of the game, a three-run bomb pushing SMSU's lead to 11-1.

Kristin Braden delivered an RBI single and SMSU scored one more run on an error to take a 13-1 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

Northern State would add four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but would come up just short as SMSU won by the eight-run-rule in five innings of play.

The Wolves would take an early lead in game two scoring one run in the second and two runs in the third inning for an early 3-0 lead.

Southwest Minnesota State would eat away at the lead beginning in the fourth inning scoring two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the score at three.

After a walk and a single to start the fourth inning, Braden singled to score Krista Steen who began the inning with a walk and Johnson grounded out to the second baseman to score Turner who singled.

Borowiak hit her team-leading 10th home run of the season in the fifth inning to even the score. Borowiak became just the sixth player in Mustang softball history to hit 10 or more home runs in a single season.

SMSU took the lead in the sixth inning when after a leadoff single and a ground out, Scearcy scored when Johnson reached on a fielding error by the Wolves.

Micki Seibring then hit a two-run blast followed by a solo home run by Dreessen as the Mustangs took a 7-3 lead. Northern State came back with two runs of their own in the sixth inning but the Mustangs would hold on for the win.

Chelsey Evans earned her ninth victory of the season and Cortney Heim shut the door earning her first save of the season as the Mustangs walked away with a 7-5 win in game two.

Southwest Minnesota State will conclude its regular season on Monday with a doubleheader against the University of Mary beginning at 1 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.
