SMSU Splits Regular Season Finale with U-Mary on Monday

BISMARCK, N.D. –
SMSU's Amy Dreessen hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning leading Southwest Minnesota State to a 7-2 win over the University of Mary in game one of a doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Bismarck, N.D. U-Mary bounced back to defeat SMSU 6-1 in the nightcap.

Southwest Minnesota State, ranked No. 8 in the Central Region, finishes its regular season 28-17 overall and 16-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play which is will set SMSU up for a sixth place finish in the league standings.

Micki Seibring went 3-for-3 at the dish for the Mustangs with a single, double, and home run.

Southwest Minnesota State scored two runs in the first inning RBI singles by Christine Borowiak and Krista Steen. Kris Penick began the game with a leadoff walk and was advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Seibring.

After a pop out by Dreessen, Borowiak lined a single up the middle to score Penick. Steen followed that with a single to the right center field gap scoring Borowiak from first base on the play.

U-Mary scored an unearned run in the third inning after an error by Dreessen at first base.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Mustangs would tack on three runs in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Penick and Seibring delivered back-to-back one-out singles to put runners on first and second.

Penick finished the game going 2-for3 at the plate. Borowiak also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with two singles.

Dreessen stepped up the plate and drilled her seventh home run of the season over the center field fence. The three-run home run would give the Mustangs a four run lead.

The Marauders would sore one more run in the fifth inning before Southwest Minnesota State would add two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Jennifer Johnson started off the inning with a leadoff single. Amber Peterson entered the game as a pinch runner. After being sacrificed to second by Penick, Peterson came around to score on Seibring's fifth home run of the season. With the home run Seibring picked up her 17th and 18th RBIs of the season.

Ali Honken won her 16th game of the season tossing all seven innings allowing two runs, one earned, and seven hits while striking out five batters.

SMSU has hit 40 home runs on the season which marks the second highest single season total in school history. In 2009, SMSU hit 45 home runs during the season which is the highest total at SMSU.

Southwest Minnesota State finished game two with nine hits but were unable to score until the top of the seventh inning pushing just one across. The Marauders had five hits but scattered six runs over six innings to down the Mustangs.

The Mustangs left 11 runners on base and committed two errors in the field, which led to three runs for U-Mary in the fifth inning. SMSU's lone run came in the top of the seventh inning. Steen came up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the inning and hit into a fielder's choice scoring Seibring on the play.

Dreessen went 3-for-3 in game two, including her sixth double of the season. Seibring was 2-for-4 at the plate in game two and 5-for-7 in the doubleheader.

The loss brings Chelsey Evans' record to 9-5 on the season. Evans lasted 2.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits while giving up three walks and striking out three batters.

Cortney Heim came in to pitch for SMSU in relief of Evans. Heim tossed 3.1 innings allowing three runs on two hits.

Southwest Minnesota State finishes the regular season 28-17 overall and 16-9 in NSIC play. The Mustangs will compete in the NSIC tournament on Thursday, May 6. The site of the tournament and SMSU's opponent has yet to be released by the NSIC office.
