FIRST PITCH
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team is set to begin the 2012 season traveling to Kissimmee, Fla. to participate in the Rebel Spring Games. SMSU is scheduled to play 14 games from March 4-12. The Mustangs open the season on March 4 against Ferris State (Mich.) at noon C.S.T. before taking on Sciences in Philadelphia at 2 p.m.
ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
SMSU finished the 2011 season 29-19 overall and 16-9 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, which was good for an sixth-place finish in the conference standings. The Mustangs earned the sixth seed in the 2011 NSIC Tournament and went 1-2 before being eliminated by Minnesota State. SMSU opened the tournament with a 6-1 loss to Minnesota Duluth before staying alive with a 4-0 win over Concordia-St. Paul. Minnesota State earned a 1-0 victory over SMSU?with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the seventh inning to eliminate the Mustangs from the conference tournament.
For the first time since the 2005 season, Southwest Minnesota State will play its first game of the season in Floridia. Every season since 2005, SMSU has participated in games played in warmer climates or indoors at a domed facility.
