SMSU tennis opens lid on 2012 season with three matches this weekend

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University tennis team is set to open the 2012 season with three dual matches in the Twin Cities this weekend. The Mustangs are set to take on St. Thomas at the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday before matching up with St. Catherine at 7 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.

SMSU will close-out its season opening weekend with a dual match against Macalester College on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Leonard Center on the Macalester campus.

The SMSU tennis team will have a new look for the 2012 season with just one returning player from its 2011 roster. Angie Wiegmann enters her senior season with a career record of 17-41 in singles play an 28-37 in doubles action.

The Mustangs welcome five freshmen to the team, including Hannah Hagen, Katie Kienitz, Allison Niedert, Ashley Plucker and Kaelyn Turner. Yome Nguyen is a senior and is beginning her first season for the Mustangs and rounds out the roster of seven.

Charlie Kost enters his second season as the head coach of the SMSU tennis team. Kost had two players earn All-NSIC honorable mention honors during the 2011 campaign.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the 2011 season with a record of 3-11 on he season, including 3-8 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with was good for a ninth-place finish in the 12-team league standings.
