KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (8-4) put an end to its 12-game trip to the Rebel Spring Games going 1-1 on the final day of games. The Mustangs lost a heartbreaker to California University (Pa.) (9-3) on a walk-off two-run home run before picking up a 4-0 win over Slippery Rock (Pa.) (1-2) on Monday afternoon.
Chelsey Evans improved to 4-0 on the season tossing a one-hitter in the Mustangs' 4-0 win over Slippery Rock. Evans held the Rock hitless through three and two thirds of an inning before giving up a hit to SRU pitcher Shaylee Ianno.
Freshman third baseman
Morgan Peterson went 3-for-3 against Slippery Rock belting two triples in the game.
Christine Borowiak went 3-for-3 against California (Pa.) with two singles and a triple. The Vulcans Katie Natter belted two home runs against the Mustangs, providing the dagger with a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift California (Pa.) to a 4-3 victory.
California (Pa.) opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Kristen McKenzie singled down the right field line to score the game's first run. The Mustangs tied the game at one in the top of the fifth inning when
Ashley Gigax grounded out to the pitcher to score Peterson who opened up the inning with a single to right field.
The Vulcans answered in the bottom half of the inning when Natter belted her first home run of the game over the center field fence.
SMSU answered in the top of the sixth inning when
Jennifer Johnson delivered a two-out pinch-hit single up the middle to score
Amy Dreessen who led off the inning with a single. California (Pa.) intentionally walked
Christine Borowiak to load the bases and
Kris Penick delivered an RBI single through the left side.
Kaitlyn Schilling struck out Gigax to end the inning stranding three runners on bases. SMSU left 10 runners on base in the game. SMSU took a 3-2 lead into the bottom half of the seventh inning before a single and a home run gave California (Pa.) a 4-3 win.
Against Slippery Rock, the Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 4-0 win.
In the fourth inning, SMSU scored on a passed ball and an RBI triple by Peterson. In the sixth, Alysse Luttman struck out swinging but reached first base on a passed ball. After she stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, she scored on another RBI triple by Peterson.
Katelyn Kalkman singled to score Peterson and that would be all the Mustangs would need as Evans shut the door on the Rock tossing a one-hitter.
Southwest Minnesota State returns to action on March 17 with non-conference games against Northern State and Wayne State (Neb.) in Wayne, Neb.
