WAYNE, Neb. – Southwest Minnesota State closed out its regular season non-conference schedule on Wednesday dropping a pair of games to Wayne State, falling 1-0 in eight innings and 11-3 in five innings.
SMSU, which was held to eight hits in the two games, drops to 9-7 overall, while WSC is now 12-8 overall. Wayne State also defeated SMSU last Saturday in a non-conference game.
In game two,
Christine Borowiak had two of SMSU's three hits, including a double and added two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.
Rachel Hoeppner suffered the loss on the mound and dropped to 4-4 on the season. Hoeppner lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and walked two.
Rachel Groff pitched the final 2.2 innings giving up four runs on three hits.
Borowiak started the game's scoring in the first with an infield single and promptly stole second, before coming around to score on a run-scoring single by
Shelbie Stoll.
WSC answered with three runs in the home half of the first to build a 3-1 lead, but SMSU came right back in the second to tie the game at 3-3.
Kaley Scearcy walked and
Jennifer Johnson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and both came around to score on a two-run double by Borowiak.
The Wildcats regained the lead in the bottom of second scoring four runs and chasing Hoeppner.
Groff was able to hold WSC scoreless in the third and fourth innings, but the Wildcats busted through in the fifth to end the game via run-rule. WSC loaded the bases with one out before pinch-hitter Kristen Martinson drilled a grand slam to push the final margin to 11-3.
In game one, Brittany Greenwood delivered the game-winning walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Wildcats to victory.
SMSU starter
Chelsey Evans dropped to 4-2 on the season tossing a complete game and allowing one run on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. SMSU was limited to five hits and left four runners on base.
SMSU was held hitless through the first four innings by WSC's Sara Scheffert, before Amy Dressen led off the fifth with the team's first hit.
SMSU had a great chance to take the lead in the seventh as
Ashley Gigax and
Krista Steen started the inning with back-to-back singles. Following a strikeout and a fielder's choice,
Morgan Peterson came through with a two-out single, but Steen was thrown out the plate to keep the game scoreless.
WSC pushed across the game-winning run in the eighth as Dani Sandel led-off with a double and following a fly out and a ground out, came into score on Greenwood's RBI single.
Southwest Minnesota State returns to action this weekend opening up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play with four road games. SMSU will face Bemidji State in a twinbill on Saturday starting at 2 p.m., before taking on Minnesota Duluth for a doubleheader on Sunday.
