BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead and eventual victory in the second game of a doubleheader with Bemidji State University (6-11, 0-2 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon in Bemidji, Minn.
SMSU ( 11-7, 2-0 NSIC), trailing 4-3 heading into the seventh inning, tied the game when
Christine Borowiak scored while
Kris Penick was caught stealing at second base and
Amy Dreessen singled home the game winning run with two outs in the inning.
Borowiak went 3 for 4 at the plate in game two, finishing with two singles and a double. She had five hits on the day and scored three runs. Dreessen had five hits in the two games, including four RBIs.
SMSU pounded out 13 hits in the first game of the doubleheader with Bemidji State, picking up an 8-0 six-inning win.
Amy Dreessen and
Ashley Gigax each finished with three hits for SMSU while adding a season-high three RBIs.
Rachel Hoeppner improved to 5-4 on the season earning the victory in the circle, allowing just three hits and two walks in five innings of work.
Five Mustangs finished the first game with two or more hits with
Christine Borowiak,
Kris Penick and
Krista Steen each adding two apiece.
SMSU opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning with Dreessen scoring on an error by the second baseman after leading off the inning with her first triple of the season. The Mustangs scored three two-out runs in the top of the fifth inning after Gigax delivered an RBI triple to right field to score Borowiak who reached on a one-out single.
Steen singled up the middle and stole second base before
Shelbie Stoll reached on an error by the third baseman. On the play, Steen and Dreessen scored unearned runs to give SMSU a 4-0 lead.
SMSU then scored four runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning to take the 8-0 lead before shutting down the Beavers in the home half of the sixth inning for the victory.
BSU got on the scoreboard first scoring taking a 3-0 lead on three hits and an error in the bottom of the second inning. The Mustangs chipped away scoring one run in the third and two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at three apiece.
Steen delivered a two-RBI single in the fifth inning to score Gigax and Borowiak who both reached on singles. BSU regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kelly Richards singled to score Summer Monsrud who reached on an error and stole second base.
Borowiak led off the top of the seventh inning with a double and advanced to third on a bunt single by Penick. Borowiak then scored when Penick was caught stealing at second base to tie the game at four. Steen then hit a two-out triple before Dreessen drove home the game-winning run on a single.
SMSU returns to conference play tomorrow afternoon traveling to Duluth, Minn. to take on the Bulldogs beginning at 12 p.m.
