KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Southwest Minnesota State (3-0) used a five-run fifth inning to earn a 6-1 victory over Lees-McRae College (N.C.) (5-14) on Monday morning in Kissimmee, Fla. SMSU finished the game with 11 hits while senior pitcher
Chelsey Evans tossed all seven innings allowing just one run in seven innings of work.
Evans improves to 2-0 on the season while Lees-McRae starter Holli Crickenberger drops to 2-4. Evans allowed five hits and one run while striking out four batters in the game.
Lees-McRae got the scored its only run of the game in the top of the first inning when Holly Crickenberge delivered a two-out double down the left field line to score Kierstie Moon who led off the inning with a walk.
SMSU tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when
Chelsey Rodenkirch singled and forced a bad throw on a stolen base attempt and came around to score.
The teams played two scoreless innings before the Mustangs broke out for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Morgan Peterson led off the inning with a pinch-hit single to left field.
Shelbie Stoll re-entered the game and was thrown out at second base on a steal attempt.

Christine Borowiak belted a triple to the fence in right center field to give SMSU a 2-1 lead.
Kris Penick came up to the plate and laid down a bunt single and advanced to second base.
Ashley Gigax walked before Steen reached on an error by the third baseman to score Borowiak. Rodenkirch reached on a fielder's choice while Gigax and Penick came in to score on a throwing error by the first baseman to take a 4-1 lead.
SMSU added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gigax delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Borowiak up singled earlier in the inning.
