ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State tennis team dropped two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches on Saturday at Gold's Gym in St. Cloud, Minn. SMSU (0-16, 0-10 NSIC) lost 6-3 to Bemidji State (3-13, 3-6 NSIC) before falling 9-0 to Upper Iowa (8-12, 5-2 NSIC).
Angie Wiegmann and
Katie Kienitz got the Mustangs going early with an 8-3 win over Miranda Milless and Caley Westin at No. 1 doubles.
Wiegmann and Kienitz carried the momentum into singles play with Wiegmann earning a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brittany Greenwaldt at No. 1 singles while Kienitz came from behind earning a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-1) win at No. 2 singles.
Allison Niedert and
Maria Lindberg dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles and
Yome Nguyen and
Ashley Plucker lost 9-8 (6) to Emily Rollins and Abby Vohaska at No. 3 doubles.
Upper Iowa swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches on its way to a 9-0 victory. Wiegmann and Kienitz lost an 8-4 decision to Amanda Nunez and Patty VanderHoeven at No. 1 doubles while
Ashley Plucker and
Yome Nguyen fell 8-3 to Jennah Smith and Nicole Pothen at No. 3 doubles.
Southwest Minnesota State will put an end to its season tomorrow afternoon hosting the University of Sioux Falls in a non-conference match beginning at 1 p.m. at Marshall High School.
