SMSU softball splits doubleheader with Concordia-St. Paul

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State had just six hits on the day but managed a split with Concordia University, St. Paul in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. SMSU (20-18, 11-11 NSIC) won the opener 2-0 before Concordia-St. Paul (24-19, 9-11 NSIC) earned a 4-2 win in game two.

SMSU won the first game with just two hits in the game. The Mustangs were held to just four hits in game two while the Golden Bears pounded out 12 hits in the nightcap to earn the split.

In game one, Chelsey Evans tossed seven shutout innings finishing with six strikeouts and one walk to improve to 12-5 on the season. Concordia's Stephanie Kappes (10-11) gave up just two hits in the game in the loss.

Krista Steen and Shelbie Stoll picked up SMSU's only hits of the game with each picking up an RBI.

SMSU scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Krista Steen drove a double to the right center field gap to score Christine Borowiak who led off the inning with a walk.

Stoll put the Mustangs ahead 2-0 with a two-out RBI single to right field to score Katelyn Kalkman who pinch ran for Sam Goblirsch.

CU put together a threat in the top of the seventh inning loading the bases with one out on a hit, walk and hit batter. Evans was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.

In game two, the Golden Bears used a three-run top of the third inning to take the win. SMSU took another early lead on an RBI double by Stoll.

The Golden Bears struck four three runs on four hits in the top of the third inning to take its first lead of the day.

CU added a run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Calli Brennan who finished the game with four hits and two RBI.

SMSU put together a threat in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring a run on two hits. Sam Goblirsch came in to the game as a pinch hitter and popped up to the second baseman to end the game.

Freshman Rachel Hoeppner was tagged with the loss allowing seven hits and three earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. CU's Ashley Kluever earned the win improving to 12-8 with six strikeouts.

SMSU will put an end to the regular season this weekend hosting a pair of NSIC doubleheaders. SMSU welcomes Northern State at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the University of Mary at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
