GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State committed seven errors in a 7-4 loss in game one of a doubleheader with the University of Mary and was the victim of a seven-run inning in an 8-4 loss in game two.

SMSU finishes the season 21-21 overall, 12-14 NSIC and failed to qualify for the NSIC tournament for the first time in school history. SMSU had qualified for the NSIC tournament every year since it began in 1996.

In the opener, SMSU's Christine Borowiak finished the game 4 for 4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. The double was her team-leading 12th of the season and 35th of her career which ranks her third all-time at SMSU.

Borowiak and fellow seniors Chelsey Evans, Kris Penick and Krista Steen all played the final games of their careers on Monday.

Evans (12-6) tossed 12.2 innings on the day coming into game on in relief of Rachel Groff and finished with six strikeouts taking the loss in game two. Evans was 1 for 2 at the plate in game two and hit her first career home run. Groff was tagged with the loss in game one allowing six hits and five runs in 1.1 innings of work.

U-Mary took a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning scoring three unearned runs on three hits and three SMSU errors. The Maruaders added two more runs taking a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning scoring on an error and an RBI double by Melissa Gonzalez.

SMSU got on the board in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Ashley Gigax scoring Borowiak who singled with one out in the inning to make the score 5-1.

After a scoreless fourth inning Brittney Hadley delivered a two-out RBI double down the right field line to put U-Mary up 6-1. The Marauders then scored an unearned run after two SMSU fielding errors to take a 7-1 lead.

SMSU added a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning but it would not be enough as the Mustangs dropped the opener 7-4.

In game two, Kaley Scearcy led SMSU at the plate going 3 for 4 with one BRI. U-Mary struck first again in game two taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a ground out by Tricia Clarke which scored Kristin Ormsby, who singled to open up the inning.

SMSU tied the game at one in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Scearcy scoring Evans who reached on a one-out walk. The Mustangs then broke through with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Evans started the scoring belting her first career home run over the left field fence with one out in the inning. After back-to-back singles by Penick and Scearcy, Steen singled through the left side of the infield to score Penick. Ashley Gigax then doubled to left field to score Scearcy before Steen was thrown out at the plate on a relay from the left fielder.

The Marauders responded with a seven-run top of the sixth inning to walk away with the sweep at Mustang field on Monday.

SMSU came in to today's games in eighth-place in the NSIC standings with hopes of advancing to the NSIC tournament.

SMSU finishes its season 21-21 overall, including 12-14 in the NSIC.
