WAYNE, Neb. – Wayne State came from behind in game one and needed just one run in game two to sweep a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball doubleheader from Southwest Minnesota State University on Tuesday afternoon. WSC (19-15, 5-7 NSIC) picked up a 10-7 win in game one before earning a 1-0 win in game two over SMSU (16-12, 7-5 NSIC).
Wayne State has now won five straight games over SMSU. The two teams met three times in non-conference games earlier this season.
Amy Dreessen had a career-high four hits with three RBIs for Southwest Minnesota State in game one.
Kris Penick extended her hitting streak to eight games going 3 for 4 at the plate while
Christine Borowiak was 2 for 4 with her third home run of the season.
SMSU grabbed an early 5-1 lead in game one, but saw its lead disappear after two big innings by the Wildcats.
SMSU pitchers allowed eight walks in the game, with
Chelsey Evans taking the loss throwing four innings allowing six runs, five earned.
Rachel Groff came into the game in relief giving up only one hit but tossing four walks allowing four runs.
SMSU opened up the game taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Borowiak and Penick started off the inning with back-to-back singles before moving up a base on a sacrifice bunt by
Ashley Gigax, who reached first on the play. Borowiak was forced out at home on a fielder's choice by
Morgan Peterson before Dreessen singled to left field to score Penick for the first run of the game.
Gigax scored on a passed ball before Stoll grounded out to second base allowing Peterson to score the third run of the game.
SMSU extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the second inning when Borowiak launched her 20th career home run over the left center field fence. WSC answered with one run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Greenwood.
Dreessen delivered her second RBI of the game on a single up the middle to push SMSU's lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Wayne State would get out of the jam stranding the bases loaded in the fourth getting a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.
The Wildcats were able to add a run in the bottom of the fourth inning after three walks and a hit batter but Evans was able to get out of the bases loaded jam to keep the Mustangs in front 5-2.
WSC scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings between a two-run sixth for the Mustangs to earn the 10-7 win.
In game two, WSC pushed across the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Kelcie Bormann. Vicki Nielsen reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kaiti Williams. Bormann then singled to right field allowing the unearned run to score.
SMSU put together threats in the top of the fifth and seventh innings but were unable to push a run across. The Mustangs left nine runners on base in game two.
Rachel Hoeppner was tagged with the loss, falling to 6-7 on the season. She finished with two strikeouts giving up six hits. Katie Bormann picked up the win for WSC giving up six hits and finishing with seven strikeouts.
SMSU continues action on the road traveling to Winona, Minn. on Friday to take on Winona State and Fayette, Iowa on Saturday to take on Upper Iowa. Both doubleheaders are set for a 1 p.m. start.
