SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Southwest Minnesota State tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Arizona Christian on Tuesday in Scottsdale, Ariz., closing its Arizona trip with a 1-2 record.  ACU received votes in this week's NAIA national poll.

Kayla Uphus earned the only victory for SMSU on Tuesday, picking up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles.

On Monday, SMSU earned its first victory of the season and its first since 2011, splitting a pair of matches. SMSU, which finished 0-16 last year, defeated Glendale Community College (Ariz.) 6-3, following an 8-1 loss to Mesa Community College (Ariz.).

SMSU's Shelby Monahan and Hannah Hagen defeated Mesa CC's Savannah Skarda and Madison Porter 9-7 to record the Mustangs' lone team point in the match as SMSU fell 8-1. Katie Kienitz and Crystal Overbaugh lost to Iulia Marceno and Laura Jaramillo 8-9 (4).

Later in the day, SMSU would take six team points, including three points from doubles matches and three points from singles matches. The dou of Shelby Monahan and Hannah Hagen took their second straight doubles match, this time in thrilling fashion, winning 9-8 (8). Katie Kienitz and Crystal Overbaugh recorded their first match win of the season as they downed Glendale CC's Sofia Rodriguez and Laura Kirby 8-6.

SMSU (1-7) returns for Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on March 23 in Fargo, N.D.
