KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Morgan Peterson hit a two-run double in the fifth inning that proved to be the game-winning hit and lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 6-3 win over Northwood University (Mich.) on Thursday morning.
Rachel Hoeppner recorded her first complete game win of the season, as the sophomore held Ferris State (Mich.) to just three runs in Southwest Minnesota State's 6-3 win in game two on Thursday.
SMSU then completed the day with a 6-3 victory over Ferris State (Mich.) to extends its winning streak to four in row and even SMSU's record at 5-5 overall.
SMSU's win over Northwood avenges its 15-0 loss in five innings that it suffered earlier in the week to Northwood.
The hit was Peterson's second game-winning hit of the season as the sophomore blasted a two-run walk-off home run to complete SMSU's comeback over LIU-Post on Tuesday.
Northwood picked up right where it left off on Sunday as the Timberwolves got two straight hits to start the game. The Mustangs had a chance to keep the Timberwolves off the board and get out of the inning unscathed, but a throw by
Katelyn Kalkman was not on target to get the out at home and Kalkman was charged with an error. Starting pitcher
Rachel Groff settled down from her early game jitters and got out of the first-inning jam by getting an infield pop-out.
Unlike the loss early in the week, the Mustangs would get some offense and would get on the board in the first inning as Kalkman scored on a hit-by-pitch after she got hit in her at-bat. The Mustangs would only manage the one run as
Emily Olson fouled out to the catcher to end the bases loaded threat.
The Timberwolves would reclaim the lead in the top of the fourth with an unearned run that scored off an error by
Chelsey Rodenkirch with two outs.
Morgan Peterson would erase the two-run deficit with another big hit – this time a two-run double off the left field fence. Rodenkirch ad Kalkman led off the inning with back-to-back singles followed by a walk by Amy Dressen. Rodenkirch would score on a wild pitch in Peterson's at-bat to make the score 4-2 before Peterson teed off.
SMSU would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the game 6-3 in favor of the Mustangs, as Northwood's third baseman, Paige Shields, was charged with a throwing error in an attempt to throw
Shelbie Stoll out at first to end the inning.
The unearned runs would not come into play as
Rachel Hoeppner completed the two-inning save by shutting down the Timberwolves in order in the seventh.
Rachel Groff (1-0) picked up the win in her five innings of work as she allowed three runs and struck out four.
Katelyn Kalkman led the Mustangs by going 2 for 2 with two singles and a hit-by-pitch, but Peterson came up with the game-winning hit in the fifth – her lone hit of the game as she finished the game 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and two RBIs.
In the win over Ferris State, Hoeppner tossed a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
The SMSU offense was led by Rodenkirch, who collected three hits, including a double and home run, while scoring three runs. Stoll and Dreessen each finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Jennifer Johnson and
Kailey Hanson also had two of SMSU's 13 hits, which tied a season-high.
The Mustangs spotted Hoeppner a 5-0 lead after just two innings. The Mustangs would get three in the first on five hits and would knock out starting pitcher, Amy Dunleavy, just 1.1 innings into the ballgame.
Chelsey Rodenkirch belted her first home run of the year on the first pitch she saw with one away in the second, she finished 3 for 4 just a triple shy of the cycle. The solo home run made it a 4-0 game.
The Bulldogs would fight back in the middle innings scoring three runs, including a two-run blast over the right field fence by Liz Hamming in the fourth.
Hoeppner would put the clamp down on the Bulldogs the rest of the way as she cruised to her first complete game win of the season. Hoeppner (4-5) worked seven innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, while walking none and striking out five.
SMSU (5-5) will wrap-up its Rebel Spring Games schedule tomorrow afternoon with ballgames at noon and 4 p.m. central time. The Mustangs will carry their four-game winning streak into battle versus Ferris State (Mich.), and Wayne State (Mich.).
