Katelyn Kalkman's 12-game hitting streak ends

BISMARCK, N.D. - Minot State University scored a combined 21 runs in its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep over Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday. The Beavers run-ruled the Mustangs in both games, winning 12-2 (6) in game one and 9-1 (6) in game two.

The Mustangs were limited to three runs and eight hits combined in the two games.

In game one, Minot State starting pitcher Mandy Greenberg allowed just three hits and two earned runs in her six innings of work.

Amy Dreessen and Morgan Peterson were the only Mustangs to record hits in the rout, Dreessen went 2 for 3 with a solo home run, while Peterson also hit a solo home run - her only hit of the game as she finished 1 for 3.

Katelyn Kalkman, who carried a 12-game hitting streak into the doubleheader saw her career-high streak come to an end as she finished 0 for 3.

Rachel Groff (2-2) suffered her second loss of the season as she allowed 13 hits, six walks and 12 earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

In game two, SMSU struck first with a run in the top half of the first but Minot State would end the game premature by scoring in every inning.

The Beavers scored nine runs on 13 hits, highlighted by Melissa Bell's 4 for 4 and Jen Dixon's 3 for 3 game.

The Mustangs were unable to get Jen Dixon out as she finished the doubleheader 6 for 6 with four runs scored, a home run, three RBI and a walk.

Rachel Hoeppner (7-6) suffered the loss as she pitched all 4.1 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits and walked two.

SMSU will return home to host Minnesota State on Tuesday, April 2, for its 2013 home opener. The NSIC doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
