KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Southwest Minnesota State softball team fell to Adelphi (N.Y.) 12-6 and 15-0 (5) to Northwood University (Mich.) on Saturday at the 2013 Spring Rebel Games.
In game one versus Adelphi, SMSU fell into a deep five-run hole in the first inning. After setting Adelphi down in order in the top half of the inning, the Mustangs let the Panthers score five runs on three hits, while committing two errors in the second inning. An error with two outs by
Katelyn Kalkman extended the inning and the Panthers took advantage - Jeanine Leo would blast a three-run homer just a batter later, making the score 5-0.
The Mustangs would fight back in the second and third as they scored four runs, including a three-run third inning.
Morgan Peterson led off the second with a solo blast to left - her first home run of the season.
Bailie Sheahan, in her first collegiate at-bat, would do the same as Peterson in the third inning as Sheahan connected with the ball and placed it deep over the left field fence. The Mustangs would get their next two runs of the inning on a
Chelsey Rodenkirch steal of home and a
Kaley Scearcy RBI single that scored Kalkman,
Amy Dreessen was thrown out at home to end the threat.
After closing the early deficit from five to one, the Mustangs would allow a three-run fourth inning by Adelphi that would prove to be the difference in the game. The Panthers' Victoria Wink would connect on a two-run double in the inning with one out.
The Mustangs would fight back in the sixth with a two-run inning but the Panther lead was too much for SMSU to succumb as the Mustangs lost 12-6, their third straight contest to begin the 2013 season.
Rachel Hoeppner (0-3) picked up the loss for the Mustangs, while Claire Kelly (3-1) earned the victory for Adelphi.
In game two versus Northwood, the bats were silent and the pitching was off-target. The Mustangs would earn just two hits and were shutout for the second time this season.
Northwood's Maddison Sebald (2-1) picked up her second win of the season, pitching five scoreless innings, while allowing just two hits, one walk and striking out two.
The Mustangs were troubled with errors as they committed four that lead to just five runs being earned of Northwood's 15 total runs.
Rachel Hoeppner (0-4) pitched 3.1 innings, while giving up 11 hits, four earned runs, one walk and struck out three.
SMSU (0-4) will return to action tomorrow morning with games versus Ashland (Ohio) and Long Island University - Post.
