SIOUX CITY, Iowa –
Bemidji State and Southwest Minnesota State split a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Monday. BSU took game one 5-4; SMSU was victorious 8-6 in game two.

In game one, The Mustangs recorded nine hits in the contest, led by Amy Dreessen (2 for 4, 2B) and Jennifer Johnson (2 for 3, 2B, RBI). SMSU used three pitchers in the game as Rachel Hoeppner started the game and came back in later in an attempt to halt the Beaver comeback. Katie Herron (2-1) received the loss as she pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and gave up the 3-2 lead in the 6th. Herron allowed three runs, two earned runs, walked one and hit two batters.

The Mustangs built a 3-0 lead after just the second inning, highlighted by a RBI double to right field by Jennifer Johnson in the first inning.

The lead slipped away late as walks and hit-by-pitches combined with timely hitting by the Beavers would complete the comeback.

The Beavers scored a run in the top of the seventh on a RBI walk and shut SMSU down 1-2-3 in the bottom half to secure just their second NSIC win of the season.

In game two, the Beavers continued hitting the ball well as Lyndsey Peterson placed a ball over the right field fence off SMSU starting pitcher Rachel Hoeppner. The home run gave BSU an early 2-0 lead.

SMSU would get a run back in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single to right field by Jennifer Johnson. Johnson fell behind 0-2 in the count but fought off a pitch to right field that scored Amy Dreessen. The Mustangs got three hits in the inning but left with just one run to show for.

SMSU would score five runs in the third to bust the game open to 7-2. Jennifer Johnson collected her third RBI of the game with a single to left field. Morgan Peterson followed with a 2 RBI double to right field that scored Chelsey Rodenkirch and Amy Dreessen.

BSU would counter with three runs in the top of the fourth, including two unearned runs that scored following a fielding error by Chelsey Rodenkirch.

A two-out RBI single to right field by Katelyn Kalkman in the bottom of the fourth made it a 8-5 game in favor of SMSU.

BSU would jab back with a two-out RBI single of its own in the top of the fifth making it an 8-6 game.
