SIOUX CITY, Iowa –
Southwest Minnesota State was swept by Augustana College (S.D.) in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Action on Tuesday. The Mustangs fell 5-2 in game one and 9-5 in game two.

In game one of the twinbill, Chelsey Rodenkirch stroked three hits for the Mustangs as she finished 3 for 4 with a RBI. Amy Dreessen (2 for 2, BB, R) and Morgan Peterson (1 for 4, RBI) were the only two other Mustangs to record hits as SMSU was held to just 6 hits.

After a sacrifice bunt that advanced Emily Heinz to second, Theresa McMahon stroked a single that put Augustana up early 1-0.

SMSU tied the game in bottom of the third when Chelsey Rodenkirch and Morgan Peterson stroked RBI hits. Rodenkirch was inches away from a 3-run  home run but the ball landed on top of the fence and back into the field of playing and ended up being a RBI double. A batter later, Peterson tied the game with a RBI infield single to score Amy Dreessen.

With the game tied 2-2 and a runner on first and second, Jenny Brown hit a RBI SAC fly to deep centerfield and Carly Peterson scored from second base. The centerfielder, Shelbie Stoll collided with rightfielder Alysse Luttmann who was ranging over to try and make the catch. Stoll hung on but was slow to get up. The play gave Augie a 3-2 lead.

With a runner on in the top half of the fifth, Erin Kemp hit a ball just inside the left field foul pole and out for a 2-run home run to give Augie a 5-2 lead.

Augie would fend off the Mustangs the rest of the way and held on for the 5-2 win. NSIC pitcher of the week Jenelle Trautmann (22-5) recorded the win for the Vikings, while Rachel Groff (5-3) suffered the loss. Carley Pickett came in the seventh inning for her second save of the season.

In game two, Augie wasted little time to put up runs as Janelle Trautmann blasted a 2-run home run following a RBI single by Lindsay Spanton to make it 3-0. SMSU would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Amy Dreessen hit a double to the right field fence that scored Katelyn Kalkman.

Cutting further into the deficit in the third was SMSU with two runs. SMSU scored its first run of the inning with an error charged to the left fielder with the bases loaded and nobody out. Emily Olson would later hit a RBI single to score SMSU's final run of the inning.

Augie would get two home runs in the fourth inning after Hoeppner recorded two quick outs. First Lindsay Spanton went to center with a solo shot and Emily Heinz followed with a 2-run home run to left center after Jenelle Trautmann singled.

Staying hot in the bottom of the fourth was Chelsey Rodenkirch as she roped a single to the right field fence scoring Shelbie Stoll from second base to make it 8-4. Jennifer Johnson recorded her ninth RBI in three days when she hit a RBI SAC fly to right field that scored Amy Dreessen to pull SMSU within three. It would be the last time the Mustangs would be able to score as they were shut down in the final three innings.

Carley Pickett (3-3) picked up the win for Augie, while Rachel Hoeppner (8-11) suffered the loss.

Chelsey Rodenkirch led SMSU as she went 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored.

SMSU (14-16, 7-11 NSIC) will travel to take on Winona State and Upper Iowa this Saturday and Sunday.
