Mustangs corralled by Warriors in NSIC doubleheader

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
WINONA, Minn. –
Winona State scored 13 runs in the first three innings in its 15-3 (5) win over Southwest Minnesota State in game one before shutting out SMSU in game two 8-0 (5) to sweep the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

WSU put a crooked number on the board in the first inning that saw the Warriors score seven runs on seven hits and an error. SMSU starting pitcher Rachel Hoeppner didn't last much longer as she allowed 12 hits and 11 runs in her two innings of work.

The Mustangs would get three runs back in the fourth sparked by Jazmyne Neely's pinch-hit RBI single to right field. After Amy Dreessen walked to load the bases, Chelsey Rodenkirch extended the inning with a two-RBI single to right that scored Neely and Stoll. Rodenkirch's 13th and 14th RBIs of the season cut the Warrior lead to 15-3.

Rachel Hoeppner suffered her 12th loss of the season as her record drops to 8-12 on the year. Rodenkirch led the Mustangs as she went a perfect 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs.

In game two, SMSU was limited to just two hits as Ashley Walker pitched five shutout innings to record her 13th victory of the year. Kailey Hanson (1 for 2) and Morgan Peterson (1 for 2) were the only two Mustangs to record a hit in the game.

Rachel Groff (5-4) suffered the loss as she pitched four complete innings allowing 12 hits, eight runs and walked four.

SMSU (14-18, 7-13 NSIC) will continue road NSIC action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader with Upper Iowa.
