ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Down 5-3 in game one, Southwest Minnesota State rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh to claim a 7-5 victory before falling 13-7 in game two of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Sunday.
SMSU moves to 11-13 overall, 4-8 in the NSIC.
Rachel Groff picked up the win for SMSU in game one, pitching three shutout innings.
In game one, SMSU was led by
Chelsey Rodenkirch as she went 2 for 3 with a run scored, a double and a RBI, while
Morgan Peterson recorded two RBIs on a pair of walks.
In game two, the offense scored seven runs again but the pitching wasn't up to par. Starting pitcher
Rachel Groff (3-4) was bounced after just a third of an inning allowing four runs and three walks and received the loss.
Katie Herron pitched 4.2 innings in relief and allowed nine runs and walked six.
Amy Dreessen and
Kaley Scearcy both knocked two hits in the game and
Shelbie Stoll finished 1 for 2 with a 2-run home run, two runs scored and a walk.
SMSU will continue road NSIC action this wednesday with a doubleheader in Wayne, Neb., versus Wayne State. The doubleheader is tabbed for 2 p.m.
