Senior Jacob Begin places first at Auggie-Adidas Open

MINNEAPOLIS — Southwest Minnesota State senior Jacob Begin placed first in the gold division at 174 pounds at the Auggie-Adidas Open Saturday. A total of four Mustangs placed in the tournament.
 
Jacob Begin (Sr., 174, 8-1) earned a perfect 4-0 record on his way to a first-place finish in the gold 174 pound bracket. Begin started his title run with a first round 17-1 tech fall to Mathew Laugen of Eau Claire and followed it with a fall at 3:00 against David Kramer from Luther. Begin then won by a medical forfeit to Josh Willaert of St. John before taking down Darick Vancura from Minnesota State by major, 8-0 in the championship bout.
 
Patrick Kelley (Fr., 157, 3-1) earned three wins on his way to a third-place finish in the silver 157 pound bracket. Kelley started his run will a fall to Robert Rocole from Eau Claire at 6:30. He then faced Jack Edberg from St. Johns and took him to another fall at 1:21. Douglas Perrin (unattached) from Upper Iowa gave Kelly his only loss by decision of 4-0. Kelley took on Matt Morris Jr. From Iowa Lakes CC and earned his third-place finish by a 10-5 decision.
 
Colton Vekved (RFr., 165, 5-3) also earned three win on his way to a second-place finish in the silver 165 pound bracket. Vekved faced Marcus Blount-McKinley (unattached) from Rochester Comm/Tech to start and advanced on a 3-0 decision. Vekved then took on Brandon Stradel from Eau Claire and won by a tech fall of 16-0. Andrew Dayland from Lacrosse won on a 13-7 decision to give Vekved a second-place finish.
 
Cole Wilson (Sr., 285, 10-2) posted a 2-1 record on his way to a second-place finish in the gold 285 pound bracket. Wilson started his run with a first-round bye before taking on Zack Gibson from St. Old and advancing on a 3-1 decision. Wilson then faced Malcolm Allen from Minnesota State and won by a decision of 2-0. He took on Donny Longendyke (unattached) and took second-place honors from a fall at 7:42.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will travel to La Crosse, Wis., to compete in the Wisconsin-La Crosse Duals, Dec. 6.
