MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team split its first two non-conference matches of the season on Saturday when the Mustangs fell 9-0 to St. Thomas but defeated Macalaster College 5-4.
SMSU opened the season with a 9-0 loss to St. Thomas.
SMSU rebounded with its first win of the young season when the Mustangs defeated Macalaster 5-4 at the Leonard Center in St. Paul, Minn.
SMSU and Macalaster split the singles matches, but SMSU took two of three doubles matches.
Taking victories in singles competitions for SMSU were
Crystal Overbaugh (6-3, 6-4),
Shelby Monahan (2-6, 6-1, 10-8), and
Kayla Uphus (7-6, 6-1).
The teams of
Katie Kienitz and Uphus, and Monahan and
Samantha Ritter won their respected doubles matches. Kienitz and Uphus defeated Gabby Queenana and Emily Fule 8-5, while Monahan and Ritter defeated Rachel Seidner and Gabrielle River by the same score, 8-5.
Overbaugh and
Lindsey Brace fell 9-7 in the No. 1 doubles competition.
SMSU will open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season tomorrow with the Mustangs taking on Minnesota State on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
