SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team split its pair of matches over the weekend versus No. 38 Augustana College and Minnesota Crookston. SMSU fell 9-0 to Augustana, but defeated UMC 6-3.
Augustana, ranked No. 38 in the latest rankings, handled SMSU 9-0. SMSU managed just seven set wins throughout the match. Augie's Katie Jesperson, ranked No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region rankings, defeated
Crystal Overbaugh 6-2, 6-0, while Jessa Richards, ranked No. 15 in the ITA Central Region, defeated
Katie Kienitz 6-1, 6-1. Jesperson and Richards, ranked No. 2 in the ITA Central Region, defeated Overbaugh and
Lindsey Brace 8-1 in doubles action.
In SMSU's 6-3 win over Minnesota Crookston, SMSU took two of the three doubles matches and the No. 2, No. 4, No.5 and No. 6 singles matches.
Katie Kienitz defeated Catherine Brown 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
Kienitz and
Kayla Uphus teamed up to defeat Casey Paris and Holly Roepke 8-3 in doubles competition.
Shelby Monahan and
Samantha Ritter also notched an 8-3 doubles victory for the Mustangs over Amanda Newman and Sarah Muellner.
SMSU (2-5, 1-4 NSIC) will travel to Mesa, Ariz., for seven non-conference matches starting March 11.
