SARTELL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team was defeated by St. Cloud State and Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches at the Fitness Evolution in Sartell on Saturday. SMSU (1-4, 0-3 NSIC) fell 9-0 to SCSU and 7-2 to BSU.
SCSU took all nine matches but needed a tiebreaker to defeat
Katie Kienitz and
Kayla Uphus [9-8, (3)] in No. 2 doubles.
BSU took all three doubles matches, including close matches over Kienitz/Uphus, 9-7, and 8-6 over
Samantha Ritter and
Shelby Monahan.
Monahan got SMSU on the board with an injury default win in No. 4 singles. Uphus followed with a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) win over Justine Scheller in No. 5 singles.
Ritter lost a close battle to Jessica Duiz in the final singles match of the day, 4-6, 6-7 (4).
SMSU will take a week off before heading to the Sioux Empire Fitness Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., to battle Augustana and Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 21-22.
