WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Kailey Hanson and
Jazmyne Neely each went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 8-2 victory over Glenville State (W.Va.). SMSU fell 1-0 to the Pioneers earlier in the week. SMSU was held in check in its final game at the Rebel Spring Games as the Mustangs managed just three hits in their 4-1 loss to Florida Southern College.
Game One
Glenville State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third with three singles and three stolen bases. GSC got an RBI bunt single and an RBI sacrifice fly to right to take the lead.
SMSU responded in the bottom of the inning by taking a 3-2 lead. Hanson and Neely roped RBI singles in the inning.
SMSU padded its lead with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth. Hanson and Neely each finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. As a unit, SMSU finished with 8 hits and left nine runners on base.
Rachel Hoeppner (1-6) was sharp for the Mustangs as she picked up her first victory of the season. She struck out seven Pioneers in seven innings pitched, while only giving up two earned runs on five hits.
Game Two
After falling behind 4-0,
Elissa Reinsma got SMSU on the board in the top half of the sixth with her RBI single through the right side. Reinsma finished the day 2 for 3.
Kaley Scearcy went 0 for 3 which snapped her season-high nine-game hitting streak.
Alex O'Connor suffered her seventh loss of the season as she pitched six innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits.
SMSU (3-13) will begin Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference on the road versus Sioux Falls on March 25.Â
