Mustang softball opens NSIC play on Tuesday vs. Sioux Falls

GAME NOTES | LIVE STATS

ON DECK

The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (3-13) kicks off the 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season on Tuesday, March 25, versus Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Mustangs and Cougars split last season's lone doubleheader. SMSU will then welcome Minot State and U-Mary to Mustang Field in Marshall, Minn., on Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30, for conference doubleheaders. SMSU is coming off a 3-7 record at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida.

STRANDED RUNNERS
Southwest Minnesota State has left 102 runners stranded on the base paths thus far this season and is hitting just .230 with runners in scoring position.
TURNING TWO
Southwest Minnesota State turned three double plays in its 4-1 loss to Florida Southern on March 14. The three double plays are the most turned since turning the same amount versus MSU Moorhead on April 19, 2009.
FIRST INNING WOES
Southwest Minnesota State pitchers have allowed 24 first-inning runs this season -- the most allowed in any inning by the Mustangs. The Mustangs have dug themselves into early deficits and haven't been able to overcome them as their 0-11 record trailing after four innings and 1-10 record when opponents score first indicate. On the contrary, SMSU has scored nine runs in the first inning -- its second highest scoring inning.
