Mustangs drop a pair of close games on Sunday

BOX SCORE: Ohio Dominican | Wayne State (Mich.)

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -
Southwest Minnesota State dropped a pair of close games to Ohio Dominican and No. 13 Wayne State University (Mich.) on Sunday in non-conference games at the Rebel Spring Games in central Florida. SMSU fell 5-1 to Ohio Dominican and 1-0 to Wayne State.

ODU (2-9) pushed four unearned runs across in the bottom of the first frame as a fielding error to lead of the game gave the Panthers early base runners. ODU would string together four singles following the error to instill the damage.

Starting pitcher Rachel Hoeppner was pitching well through four innings but gave up a hard-hit solo blast to left center to allow ODU to take a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

SMSU (0-7) put two runners on the base paths in the top of the fifth but couldn't come up with a big two-out hit that the Mustangs needed. Chelsey Rodenkirch popped out to the pitcher to end the threat. She finished the day 0-3 with two strikeouts.

Jazmyne Neely got SMSU on the board with a two-out single to right field that scored Elissa Reinsma from second. Reinsma pinch ran for Kayley Scearcy who got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The RBI was Neely's third of the season.
Hoeppner took the loss and falls to 0-5 on the season, while Rachael Stenzel got her first victory of the season as she improves to 1-5.

ODU snaps its seven-game losing streak, while SMSU falls for the seventh straight game with the loss.

In SMSU's second game of the day, The Mustangs entered a pitchers duel as WS's Lindsay Butler and Alex O'Connor went toe-to-toe. Butler, who entered the game with an ERA of 0.19 prevailed as she allowed just three hits in seven complete innings to earn her sixth win of the season. Butler struck out the side twice in the game and finished with 11 strikeouts in the game.

O'Connor allowed seven hits and five walks in her seven complete innings of work but she took her third loss of the season.  O'Connor lowered her season ERA to 6.56 from 17.18 with her performance.

SMSU (0-8) plays Ferris State and Glenville State (W. Va.) tomorrow in Auburndale, Fla.
