Mustangs suffer sixth straight defeat; No. 25 Warriors sweep

BOX SCORE: Game 1 | Game 2

MARSHALL, Minn. -
No. 25 Winona State defeated Southwest Minnesota State 6-0 in game one and 8-2 in game two to extend its winning streak to 14 games on Saturday.

Game 1 | #25 WSU 6-0
The Warriors showed off their offensive prowess in the first inning as they hit the ball hard in the first inning to earn two runs on three hits. WSU received RBI hits from Jenny Nelson and Morgan Lintz – Nelson's a RBI triple that rolled to the right field fence and Lintz' a hard-hit line drive to left field.

Starting pitcher Alex O'Connor settled down after the two-run Warrior first inning as she held the Warriors scoreless in the next three frames.

After getting a fly-out and a groundout to start the fifth, WSU put together a two-out rally that resulted in three runs to push its lead to 5-0. With two outs, Ashley
Walker walked and Nelson followed with a single back up the shoot. With runners on first and second, Lintz came up with another big hit – this time a RBI single to right. Mary Turitto followed with a RBI double down the left field line to cap the rally.

SMSU had no answer as Walker held the Mustangs scoreless in the sixth and seventh to secure her 12th win of the season and WSU's 13th straight win.

Game 2 | WSU 8-2
Turitto delivered a two-out two-RBI double to the left field fence that scored Nelson from second and Lintz from first. The clutch hit by Turitto gave WSU a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third.

SMSU had a chance to get on the board in the third when Elissa Reinsma led off the inning with an infield single and Rodenkirch made it runners on first and second with no outs when she got hit by a pitch. Katelyn Kalkman's groundout moved the runners to second and third but SMSU couldn't muster a clutch hit.

WSU added two more runs in the fourth with a two-RBI triple from Brooke Piotrowski that hooked just fair inside the left field foul line. Cydnei Gunderson and Lexi Perez, WSU's No. 8 and No. 9 batters, recorded infield bunt singles to pave the way for Piotrowski. Piotrowski later scored on a wild pitch thrown to the screen by O'Connor. Nelson kept the hit parade going as she blasted a deep two-run shot to centerfield for her 12th of the season to make it 8-0 in favor of the Warriors.

Trailing 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth, SMSU scored two runs to make it an 8-2 game as Kaley Scearcy and Jazmyne Neely tallied RBI singles.

The two runs would be all that SMSU could get in the game and doubleheader as Hanna Lythberg and Winona State went on to an 8-2 victory.

SMSU (11-28-1, 8-15-1 NSIC) will hit the road for its last three doubleheaders of the season with the Mustangs beginning in St. Paul, Minn., to take on Concordia-St. Paul on Wednesday, April 23.
