Mustangs swept by UMD on Monday

BOX SCORE: Game 1 | Game 2

MARSHALL, Minn. -
The University of Minnesota Duluth swept Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball twinbill on Monday afternoon from Mustang Field in Marshall. UMD defeated SMSU 10-3 in game one and 7-4 in game two.

GAME 1 | UMD 10-3
The Bulldogs jumped on the board first in the first with three runs on three hits. After the Bulldogs made it 2-0 with runners on the corners, head coach Jamie Dunn made a pitching change and went with Alex O'Connor. O'Connor got the Mustangs out of the inning but not before she threw a wild pitch that scored Ashley Lewis from third to make it 3-0.

UMD added four more runs in the second with RBI hits from Sami Schnyder, Lewis, and Cayli Sadler. Sadler's double to deep centerfield drove in two runs to make it 7-0 as Megan Mullen and Lewis came around to score.

SMSU got on the board in the bottom of the second with a RBI double by Alysse Luttmann that scored Karmann Carroll from second. Luttmann's double and RBI was her first and third of the season.

Luttmann came up with another big hit in the sixth inning as her RBI single to center made it an 8-3 game. Luttmann finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs in game one.

UMD added two runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run blast by Megan Mullen that hooked just inside the left field foul pole. The home run was Mullen's sixth of the season and put the game out of reach as UMD led 10-3 heading to the bottom of the seventh.

SMSU would get a leadoff double by Kaley Scearcy but she was stranded at third when Emily Olson and Jennifer Johnson struck out and flew out to end the game.

Cayli Sadler (12-8) picked up her 12th win of the season, while Hoeppner fell to 4-9, pitching just two thirds of an inning. Alex O'Connor pitched 6.1 innings of relief and allowed seven runs on 11 hits. Sadler struck out four and allowed five hits and one run over her five innings of work.

GAME 2 | UMD 7-4
The Bulldogs got things going early in the first as they loaded the bases for Sadler. Sadler hit a one-hopper to Rodenkirch at shortstop, who thought she caught the ball in the air to end the inning but it was ruled that the ball hit the ground and a RBI hit was granted to Sadler and Megan Mullen scored. Hailey Lundquist made SMSU pay in the next at-bat as she crushed a bases-clearing double to deep center to make it 4-0.

SMSU answered with one run in the bottom half of the inning with a Neely RBI single to center that scored Scearcy, who singled up the middle earlier in the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

SMSU would tie the game with three runs in the fourth – two coming unearned after a throwing error by Sadler. Carroll laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that Sadler threw away. Carroll scampered to second while Neely and Olson came around to score to make it 4-3. Luttmann came up with another big hit with two outs as her liner to centerfield scored Carroll to tie the game at 4-4.

O'Connor quickly got two outs in the fifth but Rice hit a single to left that was followed by a two-run home run by Sadler to push UMD back in front 6-4. It was Sadler's first home run of the season.

UMD padded its lead to 7-4 in the sixth with a RBI single to center by Lewis. O'Connor left the bases loaded by getting Rice to fly out to left.

Sadler retired the final nine SMSU batters to secure her 13th win of the season. O'Connor (3-11) took the loss for the Mustangs as she allowed all seven earned runs on 10 hits and walked five.

SMSU (7-20-1, 4-7-1 NSIC) will continue its homestand this Wednesday vs. Wayne State. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
