Box Score: Game 1 | Game 2
MARSHALL, Minn. - Wayne State College's Sara Scheffert needed just 69 pitches to toss a complete-game five-hit shutout over Southwest Minnesota State in game one of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Wednesday. Scheffert picked up her first save of the season in game two as she shut down the Mustangs throughout the final three innings to secure a 4-3 win for WSC in game two.
Game 1 | WSC 4-0WSC took an early 1-0 lead with three straight singles following a one-out walk issued by starting pitcher
Rachel Hoeppner.
Kaley Scearcy and
Alysse Luttmann recorded singles in the third for the Mustangs to put on a threat. Scearcy's was a hit was an infield single tracked down by second baseman Jordan King who caught Rodenkirch who was trying to tie the game from second.
WSC put a two-out rally together in the fifth to extend its lead to 3-0 when Kelcie Bormann singled to left field to score two. With Lexie Loos on first with two outs, Megan Hagemann and Kaiti Williams each singled to load the bases for Bormann.
WSC came up with big two-out pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth by Shelby Wobken. Michelle Thille, who entered the game as a pinch-runner, just beat
Elissa Reinsma's throw to the plate.
Rodenkirch, Scearcy,
Kailey Hanson,
Jennifer Johnson and Luttmann all collected hits for the Mustangs.
Hoeppner (4-10) pitched well but allowed four earned runs and three walks over seven frames of work.
Game 2 | WSC 3-2A two-out rally in the third produced three Wildcat runs. O'Connor got back-to-back fly outs to start the inning but Lexie Loos chipped an infield single just in front of O'Connor to start the rally. O'Connor would get Jordan King to strike out swinging in the next at-bat but the pitch was in the dirt and allowed King to reach first safely and prolong the inning. Kaiti Williams and Kelci Bormann would make the mistake sting as the duo strung a double and a single together to knock in the three runs – Williams' a two-run double to center.
The Mustangs scored a pair of unearned runs to answer in the bottom of the inning with
Jazmyne Neely and
Shelbie Stoll reaching on errors. Both Stoll and Neely would eventually score in the inning. The Mustangs only recorded on hit in the inning – a single up the middle by Johnson. Stoll scored when
Karmann Carroll dropped down a sac bunt and Stoll beat third baseman Hagemenn's throw to home.
SMSU could not manage to tie game in the last three innings as Sara Scheffert, the winning of game one, came in to close the door for her first save of the season – a three inning save.
Alex O'Connor took the loss for the Mustangs as she allowed three earned runs over her seven frames of work. O'Connor struck out four Wildcats and walked one. Scearcey went 2 for 3, while Johnson and Carroll each tallied a RBI.
SMSU (7-22-1, 4-9-1 NSIC) is scheduled to hit the road this weekend to play NSIC doubleheaders versus Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State.
