Jacob Begin and
Cole Wilson both advanced to the championship round of the NCAA Super Region 3 tournament, but came up short in the final bout Sunday. Both Mustangs finished runner-up and have qualified for the DII NCAA National Tournament in St. Louis, Mo., March 13-14.
Landyn VanOverbeke was defeated in the opening round by No. 5 Garrett Wangsness from Upper Iowa, but fought through the wrestle-backs to make an appearance in Sunday's consolation quarterfinal round.
Jacob Begin started the tournament Saturday with a fall at 2:45 over Batchka Zulkhuu from Lindenwood and followed it with a fall at 6:28 over Luis Alba from McKendree, to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament.
Cole Wilson started the tournament also with a fall at 1:31 over Dustin Caspers from Northern State. Wilson then took on Michael Lowman from Augustana in a rematch from earlier this season. Wilson suffered a 2-1 defeat from Lowman earlier this month, but Wilson would have his revenge as the senior earned a 10-5 decision to advance to the semifinal round.
In the final day of the tournament,
Landyn VanOverbeke started action at 125 pounds for the Mustangs. VanOverbeke faced Marcos Rios-Tamayo from Lindenwood and gave up a late takedown to suffer an 8-7 decision.
Jacob Begin started the afternoon facing No. 8 Archie Williams from Central Missouri and continued his success with a solid bout as he earned a 20-7 major decision to advance to the championship match. In the final round, Begin faced No. 3 Zeb Wahle form Maryville and led the majority of the bout but Wahle tied it up in the third period and went on to get a late take down to defeat Begin with a 7-5 decision. Begin will advance to the DII NCAA National Tournament for the third consecutive time in his career.
Cole Wilson started the final day of the tournament facing Mitchel Eull from Minot State. Wilson faced Eull in the regular season and was victorious by a 3-2 decision. Wilson started the match off strong and went on to defeat Eull with a 5-2 decision to advance to the championship bout. In the final bout, Wilson again met with a competitor from the regular season. Wilson faced No. 3 Austin Goergen of St. Cloud State earlier this season and was defeated by a 6-4 overtime sudden victory. In the championship round, neither wrestler scored a point until Wilson gave one to start neutral in the final period. Wilson failed to record a takedown in the final period and was defeated 1-0. Wilson will advance to the DII NCAA National Tournament for the second consecutive time in his career.
