ST. PETER, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team was defeated 6-3 by Minnesota Duluth before dropping a 7-2 decision to St. Cloud State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Sunday at the Swanson Tennis Center.
SMSU (4-12, 0-9 NSIC) opened the match versus UMD taking one of the three doubles matches as
Gabby Tellijohn and
Katie Kienitz took the No. 1 doubles with a 8-3 win.
In singles play, No. 1
Gabby Tellijohn earned a win with a 6-3, 6-2 score to start off the Mustangs. UMD went on to take the next three singles matches before
Ashley Hoehne continued her success and pushed her winning streak to seven matches with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory in the No. 5 spot.
UMD took the last singles match and defeated SMSU 6-3.
In the second game, SMSU No. 2 doubles (
Crystal Overbaugh and
Ashley Hoehne) took the lone doubles match by a close 9-7 (7-3) decision.
Hoehne recorded the lone win in singles action and in the process earned her eighth stright win with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 5 singles.
SCSU took the rest of the singles and defeated the Mustangs 7-2.
The Southwest Minnesota State tennis team will close out the regular season on April 11 with matches against Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston.
