ST. PETER, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team opened the 2016 season on Sunday with an 8-1 setback to Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action at the Swanson Tennis Center.
 
SMSU picked up its lone victory in No. 1 doubles with Crystal Overbaugh and Gabby Tellijohn defeating Killian Doran and Sarah McCann, 8-6.
 
SMSU's Britney Thompson and Ashley Hoehne dropped an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles, while Mariya Krumm and Madyson Brinkman lost 8-0 in No. 3 doubles.
 
Tellijohn put together a touch match at No. 1 singles, before losing to Doran, 6-2, 7-6. Overbaugh lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, with Krumm losing 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Hoehne dropping a 6-0, 6-1 match at No. 4 singles. Thompson lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, while Brinkman suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 6 singles.
 
Southwest Minnesota State returns to action on Feb. 13 with matches versus Gustavus and Augustana in St. Peter.
