ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Emporia State rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and then scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to earn an 8-7 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night at the Husky Dome.

SMSU (1-2) was led by
Karmann Carroll, who finished 4 for 4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs, while
Taylor Koloc added three hits an RBI. SMSU finished the game with 12 hits, including seven extra base hits.

ESU (6-6) held a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning before SMSU rallied to gain the lead. Carroll pushed across the first run with an RBI triple, before
Sam Flack followed with a two-run homer to tie the game at 5-5. Koloc later in the inning drilled a two-out RBI double to give SMSU a 6-5 advantage.

SMSU pushed across an unearned run in the sixth to make the score 7-5.

The lead wouldn't last as the Hornets rallied with the tying runs in the seventh and the game-winning run in the eighth.

Alex O'Connor (0-1) suffered the loss for SMSU, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in 4 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and two walks.

Southwest Minnesota State closes the weekend tomorrow with a 2:30 p.m. game versus Central Missouri and a 5 p.m. game versus Missouri Western State.
