SMSU opens NSIC action at Sioux Falls

ON DECK
The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team will open its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule today as it travels to Sioux Falls, S.D., to face the University of Sioux Falls for a doubleheader at Sherman Park starting at 3 p.m. Entering the twinbill, SMSU is 4-13 overall, while USF is 16-7.

SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS
The Cougars are 16-7 overall entering the NSIC schedule after recently finishing 3-2 in the Missouri Western Invite last week. The Cougars started their season sweeping at the SCSU Dome Doubleheaders with a 4-0 record, before recorded a 2-2 mark at the Teri Mathis Zenner Invitational and a 7-3 tick in their Spring Games. Freshman pitcher Kerrigan Hoshaw leads the Pride with a .488 batting average with 21 hits, four doubles, 11 RBI and four home runs. Senior outfielder Brooke Stetzler is hitting .434 with 24 runs scored, 36 hits, two doubles and triples and eight RBI. Senior pitcher Alyson Netty leads USF with 24 RBIs and eight home runs. Sophomore pitcher Breanna Black leads the Cougars with a 8-3 record from the circle, while holding a 1.98 ERA and has struck out 18. Hoshaw leads USF with 57 strikeouts and has an 8-4 record, while carrying a 2.92 ERA. Sioux Falls' head coach Kelsey Thompson is in her third season with an overall record of 78-47. Prior to USF, she spent time at Minnesota State and Augustana University.

USF SERIES HISTORY
Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls will meet for the seventh time on Tuesday with USF holding a 4-2 advantage in a series that started back in 2013. The series is tied 1-1 in games played in Sioux Falls after the two split the inaugural series. See full series on page 5.

THE COACH
Jamie Dunn is in her third season as head coach at Southwest Minnesota State University and has compiled a 49-71-1 overall record and a 23-28-1 in the NSIC. Prior to SMSU, Dunn spent the 2013 season as assistant coach at NCAA Division II Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colo., and three seasons as head coach at Fruita Monument High School. SCOUTING SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
The Mustangs will open NSIC action with a 4-13 record after starting the season at the NSIC/MIAA Crossover in St. Cloud, Minn., with a 2-3 record. SMSU then traveled to Florida for its annual Spring trip and recorded a 2-8 mark, before splitting a non-conference twinbill with Dakota Wesleyan last week. Junior shortstop Karmann Carroll leads the Mustangs with a .382 batting average with 21 hits, four doubles and three RBIs. Sophomore catcher Mackenzie Clouse is batting .313 with 15 hits, five doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Junior pitcher Alex O'Connor leads the Mustangs defense in the circle with a 2-5 record and a 2.94 ERA, while fanning 58 batters.
