Mustangs head to Concordia-St. Paul Tuesday

The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team will continue Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action as it travels to Concordia-St. Paul for a midweek doubleheader Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.

SCOUTING CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL
The Mustangs are 7-19 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC after being swept by Minnesota Duluth last night. CSP?was picked to finish 12th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Concordia-St. Paul opened the NSIC schedule suffering a sweep to Minnesota State, but rebounded splitting a doubleheader with St. Cloud State. Sophomore infielder Nicole Thompson leads the Golden Bears batting .415, while tallying 34 hits, 14 RBI and 17 runs scored. Freshman infielder Justine Schattner leads CSP with 22 RBI and has seven doubles, 33 hits and is hitting .384. Junior pitcher Linzy Heim leads the defense with a 6.98 ERA from the circle and carries a 5-10 record with 48 strikeouts. Concordia-St. Paul's head coach Bob Bartel is in his 12th season with an overall record of 346-275.
 
CSP SERIES HISTORY
Southwest Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul will meet for the 57th and 58th times on Tuesday with SMSU holding a 32-24 advantage in a series that started back in 1977. SMSU?holds a 19-13 advantage in NSIC games and a 15-10 lead in games played on the road. SMSU split with the Golden Bears a season ago and Marshall and suffered its last lost in St. Paul with a 2-1 defeat on April 22, 2014.
 
THE COACH
Jamie Dunn is in her third season as head coach at Southwest Minnesota State University and has compiled a 51-75-1 overall record and a 25-32-1 in the NSIC. Prior to SMSU, Dunn spent the 2013 season as assistant coach at NCAA Division II Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colo., and three seasons as head coach at Fruita Monument High School.
 
SCOUTING SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
The Mustangs continued NSIC?action last week and went 2-2. The Mustangs swept MSU Moorhead, but suffered a pair of losses to Northern State. Sophomore second baseman Sam Flack leads the Mustangs with a .385 batting average with 25 hits, three doubles and 10 RBIs. Junior short stop Karmann Carroll adds to the offense with a .333 batting average and has 25 hits and three RBIs, while junior outfielder Taylor Koloc is batting .304 with 21 hits, four home runs and 10 RBI. Junior pitcher Alex O'Connor leads the Mustangs defense in the circle with a 3-7 record and a 3.12 ERA, while fanning 76 batters.
